Founded in Toronto in 2016, Li-Cycle is an industry-leading lithium-ion battery resource recovery company and the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America. Li-Cycle is on a mission to leverage its innovative Spoke & Hub technologies to provide a customer-centric, end-of-life solution for lithium-ion batteries, while creating a secondary supply of critical battery materials. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are increasingly powering our world in automotive, energy storage, consumer electronics, and other industrial and household applications. The world needs improved technology and supply chain innovations to better manage the end-of-life of these batteries–and to meet the rapidly growing demand for critical and scarce battery-grade materials through a closed-loop solution.

Li-Cycle’s innovative Spoke & Hub Technologies are validated two-stage mechanical size reduction (Spoke) and hydrometallurgical/wet chemistry (Hub) processes that can recycle any kind of Li-ion battery, irrespective of chemistry, previous application, form factor, and size. Spokes are deployed in areas with high Li-ion battery concentrations; their output products then feed into centralized Hubs for further refinement into battery grade materials. Li-Cycle’s unique process allows for the unparalleled recovery rate of ≥95% of all critical materials found in Li-ion batteries. Our Spoke & Hub Technologies are less energy-intensive than competing technologies and produce zero direct emissions and no landfill waste. Li-Cycle’s closed-loop process also ensures all materials are either recovered and returned to the battery supply chain or sent for further processing and later returned to the economy.
